In the Spring of 2011, Pastor Jim VanZandt was looking for a new project & found a 1968 Mercury Cougar in Maryland. YSCI Staff quickly nicknamed it “Holy Mercury”. YSCI upgraded the springs, suspension & brakes, rebuilt the motor & transmission. Installed new A/C & outfitted new wheels & tires for Jim during the year. In November 2011 the restoration was complete. The car looked & performed better than in 1968, due to upgrades in equipment & technology.
Unfortunately . . . . on Black Friday, while out for a ride, “Holy Mercury I” was rear-ended by a tractor trailer! Fortunately no one was injured severely. The car was totaled by the insurance company.
Undaunted Jim searched, found & bought another ’68 Mecury Cougar. Jim bought back “Holy Mercury I” from the insurance company & started stripping off everything needed to restore “Holy Mercury II”. YSCI is in process of switching parts to the new Cougar. Jim is anxious to finish restoring “Holy Mercury II” & cruise in it soon!
When Jim brought the first 1968 Mercury Cougar to us to see after purchasing, one of our sub-contractor’s, John, saw it while in the area. John stopped & after looking over good, confirmed it was the same car he had years ago.
